Recommended books for the Trinity CertTESOL

These books form part of the required and recommended reading list to help with CertTESOL pre-course tasks, during the course and as part of a core reference library for English language teachers.

Required Reading

The following titles are required pre-course reading:

Jim Scrivener, Learning Teaching
(3rd edition), Macmillan, 2011.

An introduction to the key issues in English Language Teaching and the kind of teaching methods used on the course.

Martin Parrott, Grammar for English Language Teachers
(2nd edition), CUP, 2010.

A detailed guide to English grammar with exercises for self-study (including answer key) and information on common student problems.

This is the minimum recommended reading. These books can be borrowed from the school on payment of a deposit and, at the end of the course, either returned or purchased for future reference at that stage.

Recommended Reading

We also recommend the following titles as part of an extended list for pre-course reading. For reference, multiple copies of these are also available in the school’s trainee resource library.

Peter Watkins, Learning to Teach English: A Practical Introduction for New Teachers,
Delta, 2017.

Grammar Reference

Michael Swan, Practical English Usage (4th edition) OUP, 2016.

An excellent reference book on English. You’ll refer to it again and again during your career as a teacher.

Rod Bolitho & Brian Tomlinson, Discover English, Macmillan, 2005.

Gives you lots of insights and helps you become more aware of how English works.

Raymond Murphy, English Grammar in Use (5th edition), CUP, 2019

Written for foreign learners, but good for prospective teachers to review their knowledge of English grammar. Also useful as a source of lesson exercises. Available at 3 levels – we recommend you choose Intermediate or Advanced.
